The Ark of the Crystal in Alps

Nobuyuki Sugihara(Japan)

End

Lake Aoki was the divine lake of the national treasure Nishina Shiinmei-gu Shrine before the Meiji period. All the fish for rituals and presenting to the lord of Matsumoto came from the lake. Wondering why it was the divine lake, the artist learnt that the crystal can be found only in spring as the snow melts at Lake Aoki, where the water level drops by up to 20 meters during winter for generating hydroelectric power. He creates the shape of the Northern Alps with the crystal representing white snow on the alps and stones attached to crystal by "Sangodo"(traditional building material, ancient cement, in Taiwan, mixing brown sugar, glutinous rice, lime, and sand). The mountainscape reflected on the surface of the lake takes a shape of a boat. This shows that the memories of the lake fishermen and abundant space spreading under the Northern alps themselves comprise a single ark.
