The Secret Forest
Asakura Art Lab（Japan）
Several volunteers of the city renovated a warehouse for storing asa (hemp) at the end of the Edo period into Asakura Arts & Crafts in 2009. The ground floor is a shop and the upper floor is an attic space whereas various people can enjoy different events, including art, craft, music, and theatre performances. Asakura Art Club enjoys ‘making things’ with passion while living in Shinano Omachi. They encourage the spirits of the Northern Alps created from nature and everyday materials to slowly begin to dance. What defines the boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary? The secret entrance is everywhere. The sound of a forest piano resonates in the secret forest where the breezes, birds, insects, and beasts interact with each other lively.

Based in Asakura, Asakura Art Club was established in 2014 by artists, freelancers, and housewives living in Omachi City. Under the motto “we make every day happy”, they organise participatory installations and workshops every year.
