Library of Wooden Hearts

Maria Fernanda Cardoso(Colombia/Australia)

In the library of a closed high school, shelves that used to be full of knowledge and stories are now empty and tranquil. Cardoso was inspired by the shapes and expressions of nature, and found the shape of a human heart in the core of a young cedar tree, which led her to create a sculptural piece from 4,000 “wooden heart” pieces. The pattern woven in these red and white wooden pieces expresses the life of a young tree, and the forms growing around the piece surround the viewer.
