25 “Water Fields” (Presences and Absences)

Alfredo&Isabel AQUILIZAN

In Lake Kizaki, one of the three lakes of Nishina Sanko, visitors findwhat appears to be a group of islands, yet is actually a convoy of boats lined up as if in a parade. On one group of boats, there are dead trees, tree trunks and shrubs; and on another group of boats, there are loads of household items and other things taken from the abandoned houses in the area. The former, representing an alarm raised to warn us again the environmental destruction of modernization, and the latter, a symbol of problem of population decline, combine to create a supernatural scene. The boats rock and sway with the wind and waves, telling their story through their uncanny song.
