27 Tying Cloud Knots

Yasuaki Igarashi

In “Tying Cloud Knots,” Igarashi weaves a braided cord in cooperation with the people of Shinano Omachi who carry on their lives among the Northern Alps. The braid begins at the lake and is woven vertically up into the sky until it is eventually bound to the clouds. It symbolizes the connections and act of helping one another, that is, the lives that were brought together by those bonds, and the spirit of mountain culture that is connected to a different world on a vertical plane. It is also an expression of the cycle of nature, in which the water from the Northern Alps melted snow is eventually returned back to the heavens.
