34 Hameau d’ellipes
Varini creates enormous paintings, using complex, three-dimensional spaces and structures as his canvas. Painted in bright, primary colors, at first glance the paintings appear as disconnected lines and broken ellipses, but if viewed from a certain point, the lines and ellipses become perfect circles and geometric figures. For this year’s art festival, Varini chooses a small farming community surrounded by terraced rice paddies in Yasaka, where the entire population consists of only three families, to unveil his next brilliantly colored geometric painting. As viewers walk through the village coming close to painted buildings and lives of the local people, they experience the art with a vivid awareness of their connection to the community.
