Omatchi-city in Nagano prefecture is surrounded by alluvial fans which are fertilised by infiltrated water escaping from running water streaming down from the Northern Alps.
There used to be water channels through the houses and clear water was running throughout the city.
Such water has grown rich forests, cultivated unique lifestyle and nurtured distinctive culinary culture of the region.
The Japan Alps Art Festival is an attempt to survey mountains from corridors that connect alluvial fans and look up to the blue sky from the water ways.
Artists selected from Japan and abroad will create spectacular and refreshing artworks as they face distinctive topography with mixed vegetation of south and north cutting across the island of Japan and its history.
Above all, “omotenashi” engaging the entire region will entertain visitors.
